Lynwood Gold Forsythia (Forsythia x intermedia)
Forsythia x intermedia 'Lynwood Gold', is an old time favorite with an upright spreading habit and big yellow flowers up the entire length of stem. The Lynwood Gold Forsythia is one of the best and most reliable of forsythias. The flowering stems appear as deep golden wands in April. The 'Lynwood Gold' forsythia is a dense growing plant with an upright habit.
Lynwood Gold Forsythia is excellent for hedging, fast growing and tolerant of moist soils. Lynwood Gold Forsythia grows 6 to 8 feet tall and wide and does best in sun to light shade. Lynwood Gold Forsythia plants do not need perfect soil, but will perform best when planted in well-drained soil that is enriched with organic humus. So the addition of peat moss or processed manure or compost at planting time is really beneficial in getting the plant off to a good start. Lynwood Gold Forsythia is a deciduous shrub that is best planted or transplanted during the dormant season.
General rules for pruning Lynwood Gold Forsythia are to allow plants to develop for the first three years with minimal pruning. Once plants are established prune in mid spring after flowering by thinning out crowded stems from the center of the shrub. Also remove one or two old stems from the base. A little pruning will go a long way to keep your forsythia attractive and free flowering.

How To Grow Your Own Forsythia Bushes
Grow forsythia from new growth: To grow forsythia from new growth, you can use several propagation methods including softwood cuttings, semi-hardwood cuttings, and layering.
For softwood cuttings, take cuttings from the current season's growth in late May through early July. Select young, healthy, non-flowering shoots and root them in a pot filled with a rooting medium such as coarse sand or perlite. Keep the cuttings in bright but indirect light and cover them with a clear plastic bag to maintain humidity. Roots should form within 6 to 8 weeks.
Semi-hardwood cuttings can be taken mid-July to early fall from matured current season's growth. These cuttings are slightly more mature than softwood cuttings and have a higher success rate.
Layering involves pinning or burying a portion of the stem in the soil and waiting for new roots to form before cutting it from the parent plant. This method is particularly useful if there are stems close enough to the ground to be pegged down into the soil.
Once rooted, the new forsythia plants can be planted in well-prepared soil in a sunny or partially shaded location. Ensure the soil is well-draining and moderately moist. Mulch around the base of the plant to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. For best results, plant forsythia when the plants are dormant, from autumn to late winter.
All of our Lynwood Gold Forsythia Bushes are started from cuttings or suckers off our main Lynwood Gold Forsythia Bushes. Lynwood Gold Forsythia Bushes like to be planted in full or partial sun and grow rather quickly.
Note: Potted Lynwood Gold Forsythia Bushes can be transplanted almost any time of the year since their root system is barely disturbed with little or no stress to the plant when transplanted.
